Why did you choose GGC and how did you select your major? I came to GGC because I saw it is an upcoming leader in college education and I was not wrong. Recently GGC was named the most diverse school in the south and I am proud of that. Not only is it diverse but because it is a smaller college I have more opportunities to network with faculty than I would at a larger institution. It also helped that GGC was close to home and the tuition was not as high. I picked General Business as my major because having worked in the family business since age 10, I have a good background in the business world when it comes to real life application. However, I have limited knowledge when it comes to the textbook version which I know is not too different and I always like to know both sides because often you need to know both in order to be successful.
The Core Values of the Four Pillar Society are Leadership, Scholarship, Service, Creativity and Philanthropy. Which of these pillars do you most relate to? Amazingly, I can relate to all five of the core values. I can relate to leadership because of my Air Force career and the fact that I was raised to be a leader, which I learned comes with a great deal of responsibility. As a leader of an organization, you are responsible for not only making decisions, but also how your organization and people are affected by that decision and that burden can sometimes eat people from the inside out. When it comes to service, I have always known that there is no amount of money that can replace the feeling you get from helping someone first hand. Throughout my high school career, I devoted a large portion of my time to the athletic department by volunteering as a student athletic trainer. Through this experience, I learned a lot about myself and my work ethic. I also learned a lot about others just by observing. I see service, just like anything else, as a networking opportunity and because of what I put into the athletic department, I gained valuable connections and insight about what goes on within an organization when it comes to making controversial decisions. As for scholarship, one of the core values of the Air Force is "Excellence in All We Do" and as an Airman, I strive to achieve that goal everyday, whether I am driving, working on an assignment for school, or even cleaning my room. I believe creativity and perseverance go hand in hand because without perseverance, one cannot be pushed to be creative. For example, a couple of years ago I got my truck stuck in mud. I was determined to get out because I could not wait an hour for a tow truck to winch me out. Since I chose not to wait, I was forced to find a creative solution which was to get a piece of wood, wedge it under the tire so it could gain some traction and keep the tire from just spinning. If I was willing to wait for the tow truck, I never would have been forced to find a creative solution, hence why perseverance and creativity go hand in hand. Lastly, philanthropy; I believe this is a vital part of any community because without people who are willing to give, there cannot be success within society. As a silent board member of my family's non-profit organization, I know how important it is to give. Philanthropy is one of the key factors that helps maintain society by spreading wealth and aid to those who need it most.
